Filming on the 5th December.

Using the green screen: (shots 13, 14, 15 (continuous shot))

When filming today, I used the green screen as I had done test shots in the morning and been told about how to use it and how to then edit the background I wanted onto it. This went well because I knew the shot that I wanted to film and I shot it 3/4 times so that I can watch all of them and decide which one works best. I haven't looked at them on the editing suites yet, but I am hoping that they are all okay and not blurry for when I come to edit the footage. I had to do multiple shots because on some of the videos the actresses kept laughing as it was a new thing for them to do so they felt embarrassed. This had an effect on the footage as it made it look unprofessional and messy, so I filmed the shot a few times.

Problems with filming:

  • Shadows and lighting
  • Framing
  • Laughter
  • Timing
Before I started filming I realised that, because of the lighting, there was shadows caused by the artist and the actresses. I had to then add some lighting behind them so that this made it more balanced and made it look natural. This was because the shadows would become a problem when editing as the green needs to be the same colour or it won't edit out as good as possible. I also realised that the camera had to be a lot closer to the people being filmed than I had initially thought. This was because at first the camera had a lot of the surroundings in and therefore I had to move the camera and alter the shot so that the only things visible were the green screen, the artist and the actresses. As the actresses hadn't been filmed before and were quite shy doing this, they started laughing just before I started recording. This resulted in us having to wait for them to compose themselves so that I could get the shot I wanted, which meant I lost some filming time that I could have used to film other shots that I need for my video. As the shot is quite quick and only lasts a couple of seconds, I had to get the artist to move into the shot quickly, and had to get the actresses to move out of the shot also quickly so that it goes in time with the lyrics. This had to be done a few times because the timing wouldn't work on some of the shots, so had to be done multiple times to get it to work properly.

Using the white background: (shots 2, 3, 4, 5 (continuous shot))

After filming these shots, I still had around 15/20 minutes left until dinner was over and everyone had to go to their next lesson. I decided that rather than packing everything away and leaving early I would use this time to my advantage, and filmed a shot that I needed of just the artist. I got a lip syncing shot and decided to use the white background for this particular shot as I am going to use a white background for the lip syncing ones as this will show how I am being consistent. Therefore, they can all be done in a small space of time and can be done on the same day(s). This went well and only needed to be filmed twice, which proved a successful attempt.

Test shot using green screen.

I am going to do some test shots either today (4th December) or tomorrow (5th December). The reason for me being undecided about the timings of filming is because today Chloe has booked to use the green screen. I am hoping that she will be done in time for me to quickly do some test shots, but if not I have also booked the room tomorrow, first period. Because me and Chloe both don't have a lesson, I may have to use this time to do my test shots if I am unable to film them today. I have also booked the room for dinner time tomorrow so that I can do the filming for my actual video. This is because this is when my artist and two actresses are available for filming and there is one shot near the beginning of the video that I need them all to be in.

For one of my shots, I plan on using the green screen to place the artist and the two female actresses I have into a particular scene, rather than having to shoot it outside. I am going to ask Ben (the technician that we have here at the college) about how to use the the green screen and what to do when editing these parts of the video as I haven't used the room before. This will be a good thing to do because it will mean that when I shoot the real parts that I need for my video, I will already have the understanding of what to do so will be able to do it independently. For these test shots, I am going to use a photo that is already on the college computer to place behind the artist so that I don't have to take a specific one for these test shots.

Edited test shot;

In this shot I used the artist and one of the actresses that will be in my video to illustrate the use of a green screen. When I do my actual filming for this part of the video, I will be using another actress and will also need a picture of a brick wall.

How to do the editing;

When editing the video, I didn't know what I was doing because I was new to using Adobe Premier Pro. I had to ask the technician to help me and he taught me about what to do and how to do it. I imported the video onto the software, and then dragged it into the timeline. I had to use the chroma key to remove the green background, and add a picture to it and make it fit the screen. I then stretched the image out so that it lasted the length of the video and so they matched. I then saved the video and uploaded it to YouTube so that I could embed it.

✓Good✓ or ✖bad✖?

I used a picture that was stored on the computers at college as a tester for this shot as the main focus of doing this was to show how I have learned to use the green screen and how to place an image as the background. I think the video has worked well but I haven't removed all of the green background, which makes the shot look slightly unprofessional. This was because I did this as a rough edit and the results weren't too important as it won't feature in my final video. I now have the knowledge of how to use the green screen, so will be able to edit my video when it comes to editing it by myself.

Digipak research, template and examples.

This is the template I am going to use when creating my product. I chose this template because it allows me to have more images in my product; therefore allowing more creativity in my work. This is conventional for an artist's album, as they usually have a space for an image for the front cover, the back for a tracklist, and the inside which contains the CD(s) and a booklet. I think that for my product I will use this as a rough template, as I would like to have 2 discs; one being the CD and the other either being another CD with additional tracks or being a DVD with music videos on. I will add images images to these which will be relevant to the songs on the album, as I will be using Richard Dyer's Star Theory and creating a 'star', making the artist fit into a mould in the music industry.

This is an example of an album that was released by the most-followed artist on Twitter, Katy Perry. Her album follows a candy theme, which is reflected in the prints on the CD's although the songs on the album are simple and don't particularly relate. The song that does have any candy reference is California Gurls, as this contains a fairytale land consisting of sweets and treats everywhere.

This is an image from the video for 'California Gurls'. The candy theme represents the artist's personality as she is seen in the music industry as a sweet woman and this is the reason so many young girls idolise her. This supports Richard Dyer's Star Theory as she most likely doesn't usually act like this in her spare time. This is an act and reflects her 'star' personality.

Tove Lo is an indie/electro pop artist from Sweden, and the image above is her debut album. This album is mentioned in her song 'Not On Drugs', which is used as a promotional technique to try and get the album more sales. I think the way this album looks is really interesting as the artist appears on the front cover, back of CD case and the physical CD; which is not a convention of a CD. I really like how the artist has used only 2 main colours for the design of her album, as this gives it a more professional finish and makes it look thought through and tidy. The thing I like most about the whole digipak is the CD design as this relates to the song 'Not On Drugs', because she uses a similar shot in the video to create the illusion of drugs.

This album was a reissue of the artist's debut album 'The Fame' which uses a black and white colour scheme to illustrate the dark theme of the album, reflected in songs such as 'Teeth', 'Monster' and 'So Happy I Could Die'. This album is a very dark one by Lady Gaga, but I really like the consistency that appears in the album as it all pieces together and makes sense.

This is the fifth studio album by Rihanna, and uses roses as the main theme throughout the product. A song on this album is 'Only Girl (In The World)', which has roses in the video so relates to the album and I think these flowers are used to represent love and also to represent the artist's innocence. I like the way the album has the 2 CD's on the sides of the inside rather than next to each other because this breaks conventions and therefore makes the album a lot more memorable and likable as it is original.

This is one of the more basic albums that I have found and talked about for digipaks, and is the debut album for the artist Ariana Grande. I really like the simplicity of the album, as it is very pale in the colour scheme that has been chosen. I think this is used to reflect the type of artist Ariana is, as she is very sweet in her music and is very popular because of this. Although I like how the album is very simplistic in it's design, one thing I dislike about it is the CD. This is because I expected it to have an image on to match with the front and back covers but doesn't, and I think this makes it disappointing.

Researching the digipaks that already exist has helped me to understand what the conventions are and what to include in my product;
  • All parts of product relate to one another
  • Tracklist doesn't cover photo on back (if there is one)
  • Colour choice is consistent
The images above show the digipaks of various artists, all of which are female who have a similar target audience of who I want to aim my product at. I think these all illustrate the conventions of an album for an artist because they all have similar things on them and follow similar layouts. Although they all follow similar conventions and contain things that are expected in an album, they all have different themes and colour schemes in them, making them all very different also. This is because the artists all have different ideologies and their albums contains different song, with different genres and meanings.

Editing the image for my video.

For my video I had to take a picture of Chloe, who is going to be the artist. This is because for one of the shots in my video I am going to have the artist look at a picture of how she wants to be, and I am going to show how I have edited the photo to get the image that I wanted.

At first, what I did was edit the image's levels to make her kimono stand out and make it brighter, as this is how the artist in the image wants to be seen as she wants to be popular and wants everyone to like her.

I then changed the brightness of the image to make Chloe look even brighter, and then edited the saturation to make her skin look orange. I did this because I think this portrays her 'fake' attitude as it looks like fake tan gone wrong and this is something that is stereotyped towards popular girls as they focus a lot on what they look like.

New idea for video.

For one of the shots in my music video, I was going to have the artist and both of my actresses stood near a brick wall, which I have found around college. I planned on filming this at a dinner time whilst at college as I don't have any free lessons with Amber, so this would be the only time I could film all three of them at once. Because of this, I know that there will be a lot of people walking around the college, which could cause some problems:

  1. Making the artist and actresses feel awkward and embarrassed (this would show through on camera)
  2. People walking across the shot (this would mean I would have to shoot multiple times to get the shot done)
  3. Possibly getting knocked (the camera could fall and break, any of the cast or myself could get injured, and the tripod could also fall and break)
Another problem that could occur is the fact that it could be cold or wet when I decide to film, making the video not look how I want it to and also would cause the artist and actresses to get wet or cold. I think that this would easily show up on camera because they would feel uncomfortable. Because the green screen is inside, the artist and actresses definitely won't get wet or cold, which will benefit me when creating my product and filming particular scenes because they will easily be able to do what I need and will look more comfortable.

To prevent this, I have decided that I will use the green screen that the media department have to film this shot. To do this, I plan on taking a picture of the brick wall during either one of my media lessons, or in a free that I have. I am then going to film the shot with the artist and actresses on the green screen so that I can then use the editing software to put the brick wall into the shot. This will reduce how awkward/embarrassed they feel because the only people present in the room will be people that they know, including myself as I will be filming.

Competition with other artists.

As the artist for my music video is a new and up-and-coming one, I have looked at the Top 40 on the BBC Radio 1 website to see what artists she would be up against when creating music. As this is the top of the charts, it includes very popular artists/bands that are very well known and whom are in the charts a lot because of this. I then decided to look at the bottom of the charts, as this is a more accurate idea of where the artist would appear, as she wouldn't be well known but may be liked by some people.

A lot of the songs that are at the bottom of the charts are either songs that have previously been at the top of the charts and have gradually fallen down, or are new songs that an artist has released. This is why I think that the song I am doing will appear here as the artist is unknown, but may still be found by some people by recommendations on a social media site or by their friends recommending the artist.
